Albion Street shops and market were at the heart of the large and bustling Surrey Docks community. The Docks closed in the 1970s and the area became the subject of massive regeneration.
The traditional role of Albion Street was challenged by the creation of a new shopping facility at Canada Water and the arrival of the Jubilee Line.
Albion Street has long been home to the Norwegian and Finnish Seamans Missions and churches. Together with a Primary School and a Health Centre these provide the main day time footfall. Currently, the retail parade includes a Deli which hosts art exhibitions and an UpMarket Charity Shop as well as a chemist, dry cleaners, tanning salon, florist, general store and a number of eateries.
Since 2012 the has street hosted very sucessful SCANDI spring and christmas markets.
